'Johin' is the result of an interspecific cross between Acer shirasawanum and Acer palmatum, so it's proper name is Acer x 'Johin', and it could be called a Red Full Moon maple. The A. shirasawanum parentage can be seen in the long, shallowly dissected, creased lobes, with the red color lent by the A. palmatum parent. Particulars on this tree are hard to come by, since it is newly created, but it seems vigorous, so will probably be larger than the standard A. palmatum. Some A. shirasawanums can reach 30'. It may also be hardier than the typical palmatum, which bottoms out at zone 5. Introduced by Buchholz Nursery in Oregon, who now call it Acer shirasawanum .. continue
